Pillow Talk: Olivia Rae James

Olivia Rae James is an editorial and wedding photographer from Charleston, South Carolina.  She is also the beautiful photographer behind our photo shoots including the most recent in Colorado for our Forest collection.

 1. Why do you love what you do?

I get to capture people in their best light, on one of the happiest day of their lives! I get to freeze a moment in time that they will treasure forever! That is such a fun honor.

2. How did you get to where you are now?

By just doing it. I got my entire photography education (and continue to get it) through trial and error, observation, asking questions, and practice. I’m happy I was blissfully ignorant enough to go for it. I figured I could always do something else if it didn’t work out. But I had to at least try!

3. Who are three of your style muses?

My mom - as much as I used to fight it, she is always right when it comes to style advice. Her style sticks to the tried and true classics -  lots of black, beautiful fabrics, and bright lips - but is never boring.  My friend Lily - she’s a natural beauty and doesn’t wear a stitch of makeup and sticks to her uniform (uniforms are a theme here, I love them). She’s so gorgeous and feminine and comfortable in her skin - she doesn’t try to look like anyone but herself.  People I follow on Instagram but don’t actually know: I love the style of Daphne Javitch, Pernille Teisbaek, Laura Brock and Alison Carroll.

4. What is your next travel destination?

A family trip to New York for my dad’s 60th birthday! In between museums, a comedy show, and lots of walking, we’re most excited to eat and drink at our favorite spots.

5. What is currently on your bedside table?

Here I Am by Jonathan Safran Foer, a framed photo of my husband dipping (and almost dropping) me at our engagement party at a French restaurant in DC, and lots of hair ties.

6. Tell us something that people may not know about you.

I can recite every word from That Thing You Do, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and Grease! (But no one ever takes me up on it!?)
